Monthly Treeverse Update #13
The thirteenth edition of monthly Treeverse updates. Read below for some game development insights on what we’ve worked on in the last month.
2022 is over. We go into 2023. What a year! The team is incredibly excited to keep building out Treeverse.
Pre-Alpha just launched a bit ago for the chosen applicants. We are allowing specific content to be shared from it, so stay tuned for more of that over the next month.
Concept Art Update
Some words from Scott, our Art Director:
“For the art team, the month of December was again mostly dealing with optimization, debugging and fixes to complete the pre-alpha. The dev team is testing constantly and will periodically send in requests for the art team to help fix certain issues such as performance drops, missing skill icons, or unintended visual abnormalities.
However, the concept team is continuing with the exploration on things such as gear progression.
These gears may seem simple, but the concept team actually adheres to a detailed set of restrictions provided by our 3d team which ensures that these gear pieces can work separately and functions with our avatar system. Here are some of the work below.”
This month we finalised the implementation of all the systems we wanted for pre-alpha, and finished fixing severe and high priority bugs. This is a big milestone for the company and the engineering team to finally have something shipped. The main point of pre-alpha was to align our company on what it really takes to ship a small version of our final vision. It was much more difficult than we originally anticipated, and the journey has really opened our eyes to some of the inefficiencies in our process which we have started addressing. Internally the core multiplayer architecture base has been setup and is what we will build on top of going forward. The engineers have started familiarising themselves with that codebase already and we will be spending the month of January experimenting further and doing extensive knowledge transfer and exploration. Going into 2023, one of our goals is to take a step back and give ourselves the time to experiment and explore more than just to crunch out requirements. We are starting off 2023 with an internal Game Jam. This gives the team a much needed mental reset to really explore their creative side and building out cool things
Some words from our Lead Game Designer, Angelo:
“We are about to release our very first public release version of Treeverse!
This version will focus on dungeon levels, character progression through the Knowledge Tree, and enhancing weapons with new abilities through the Recasting System.
In order to provide a smooth and enjoyable experience for our pre-alpha testers, we dedicated this whole month to configuring game bugs and errors.
For our Pre-alpha version, we have two main test goals:
First, is our monster’s behaviour. We designed a few monster behaviours and combat styles, differing in their attack range, charging ability, and other mechanics. Some of these are not so easy to deal with, such as a monster’s unpredictable area attacks or their fast-paced multiple cast of AOE spells. We look forward to hearing from our players any feedback or suggestions.
Second, is our weapon variety, which is used during combat. We have a high-damage but slow two-handed Great Sword, a faster one-handed Field Axe, and a long-range Hunting Bow.
We hope to hear which of these is your favourite and which requires tweaking. Lastly, we hope players can offer us their continued support and feedback after testing.”
The Pre-Alpha will last 1-2 weeks. As for the team, our game jam started this week and will last the entire next month. A game jam is an event where participants try to make a video game from scratch. We have split our team into 4, and they will be working on this. This is also linked with our next priority for 2023: create a great PvP experience. PvP won’t be part of the main game loop but it allows the team to build towards something whilst still creating something fun (and it will be a part of the main game).
Another step in the direction of the end goal: create a great game that people will play. From the start of 2023, we also plan to explore the universe of Treeverse so people understand it’s much greater than just a game.
